SIOMAI RECIPE | STEAMED CHINESE DUMPLING

Siomai recipe – Siomai is a type of wrapped meat dish native to the Philippines. It’s made by filling wrappers with ground pork, covering them in dough and then sealing it all up tight before steaming or boiling for 20 minutes at least! Siomai can be filled with anything you like; seafood, vegetables – even herbs if that sounds good enough for your taste buds (and stomach). I added turnips because sometimes people need something different than just plain old noodles when they’re craving carbs after too many Filipino beers 🙂

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 kilo Lean Ground Pork
  • 1 cup Turnips or Singkamas, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup minced Carrot
  • 2 tbsp  Spring onions, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Pepper
  • 2 Eggs, raw
  • 1/4 cup Soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 80 pcs Siomai or Molo wrappers

Directions

  1. In a large clean mixing bowl, brush olive oil on the surface then add all the ingredients except the wrappers
  2. Mix all the ingredients well
  3. Using a small ice cream scoop or spoon brushed with oil, scoop the ground meat (depending on the size you want and the size of the wrapper, not too big so that it cooks well on the inside) and wrap with the molo/siomai wrappers
  4. Prep the steamer by plate or grill with oil, arrange the siomai in place
  5. Add the water on your steamer based on the size and type of the steamer, add a teaspoon of salt for every 4 cups of water, boil the water first before placing the siomai so that you can time how long it cooks
  6. Steam for 30 to 45 minutes.
  7. Serve this siomai recipe with your favorite sauce. I recommend calamansi extract, soy sauce and a bit of Chiu Chow Chili Oil
