BAKED MUSSELS | TAHONG

I’m on a mission to eat more seafood and you should be too. We all know the benefits of eating fish: Omega-3’s, protein and vitamins galore (just to name a few). But what about mussels? Mussels are hands down one of the most delicious creatures in the sea. They’re also super healthy– they come loaded with iron, vitamin B12, selenium and zinc! I love this baked mussels recipe because it’s simple enough for me (and my picky kids) to make but still tastes like something from a fancy restaurant. Get ready for some serious flavor!

 

Ingredients

  • 1 kg mussels (tahong)
  • 1 head garlic, minced
  • 3/4 cup cheese, shredded
  • 1/3 cup butter, melted
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • a pinch of salt and pepper
  • 3 tablespoons cooking oil

Directions

  1. Soak the mussels for 30 minutes then thoroughly clean the mussels by brushing and removing the hair and barnacles then rinse and set aside. (discard mussels with broken shells)
  2. Fry garlic in cooking oil under medium heat while stirring until it turns golden brown then set aside.
  3. Bring water to a boil then add the clean mussels and cover. Stir occasionally for about 3 to 6 minutes until mussels are open and cooked. (Do not overcook mussels. The meat will shrink if cooked for too long)
  4. Let the mussels cool down then remove all the other half of the mussel shells without meat and discard.
  5. Mix together melted butter, sugar, salt and pepper and spread over the meat.
  6. Lay out all the mussels in a baking sheet meat side up then shred the cheese on top of the mussels.
  7. Preheat oven at 355°F/180°C and cook for 10-15 minutes.
  8. Once cooked, sprinkle with fried garlic and serve.
  9. Enjoy your baked mussels with family and friends!
